In case you are eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, you would need to quote your Aadhaar number when you apply for a permanent account number (PAN) and in your income tax return from July onwards. As many as 2.07 crore taxpayers have already linked their Aadhar with PAN.The government believes linking Aadhar to PAN numbers will curb tax evasion through the use of multiple PAN cards. There are over 250 million PAN card holders in the country while Aadhaar has been issued to 1.15 billion people. As per the section 139AA of the Act, the linking of both is mandatory even if you don’t file income tax return but you have both PAN and Aadhaar you have to link them otherwise your PAN will be liable to become invalid from a date to be given by the government. The link requires a person to punch in his PAN number, Aadhaar number and the “exact name as given in the Aadhaar card”.”After verification from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the linking will be confirmed”.Following the Supreme Court ruling, the revenue department has notified amendments to the income tax rules dealing in PAN application, which will come into effect from July 1, 2017.The bench rejected the contention that since the apex court has been passing orders time and again on the issue of Aadhaar, government should not have come out with a provision in the IT law to make UIDAI mandatory for the goal of allotment of PAN and linking it with the ITR. It had, however, granted a partial stay on its rollout until a Constitution Bench had ruled on the issue of the right to privacy. You Can Also Link The Aadhaar number with PAN through SMS too. Because the government has made this mandatory and this rule will be implemented from July 1.The department’s e-filing website – – has created a new link on its homepage making it “easy” to link the two unique identities of an individual. The government looks decisive to give Aadhar all the power by making it mandatory for PAN Card application and filing Income Tax Returns. However, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had contended that Aadhaar was made mandatory for allotment of PAN to weed out fake cards which were used for terror financing and circulation of black money.
