2017 Emmy Nominations Biggest Snubs: 'This is Us' and 'Stranger Things' Stars Slammed

The 69th Academy Awards released its list of 2017 Emmy nominations, but many are not pleased with it. Several lead actors of hit TV series were snubbed while there are also other surprises.

NBC’s Saturday Night Live and HBO’s Westworld led the nominees this year with 22 nods each. Dan Fogelman’s drama This is Us received 11 nods while Netflix’s Stranger Things scored 18 nods. Both dramas were nominated in Best Drama Series category, but the acting of their lead actresses was snubbed.

This is Us leading actress Mandy Moore and Stranger Things’ Wynona Ryder did not receive any nominations. “Mandy you should have been nominated too, you are simply amazing on the show! Totally blown away by your acting,” a Twitter user wrote.

Fans of Stranger Things were delighted for Shannon Purser’s nomination for Best Guest Actress for her performance as Barb. However, they were also stunned to know that Ryder did not make it to the Best Actress list. Some Twitter users questioned why Ryder did not receive a nomination, but Purser received a nod despite appearing in just five episodes.

The no recognition for Ed Harris of Westworld was a shock to many as well. The HBO sci-fi series grabbed more than 20 nominations, but none of those are for Harris. The actor’s character, Man in Black, is one of the most talked-about roles in the show.

Last year’s winner for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Rami Malek, did not receive a nomination either. His show, Mr. Robot, was left out as well. A&E’s Bates Motel and its stars Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga were also left out of the nominations despite the critics’ approvals of their performances.

HBO’s The Leftovers was also left in the dark as well as FX’s critically acclaimed drama The Americans. Its stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. However, both scored acting nominations. Many social media users were also upset that Netflix’s revival of Gilmore Girls and Lauren Graham did not receive any nod. However, the show’s other star, Alexis Bledel, received a nomination for her performance in The Handmaid’s Tale.

2017 Emmy Nominations Surprises

Modern Family was trending on Twitter after receiving its eight nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series despite the show’s declining ratings, the Washington Post noted. One Twitter user pointed out Modern Family’s nomination while HBO’s Insecure did not receive any. Issa Rae was snubbed for Best Actress, and the series was taken aside for Best Series.

The 2017 Emmy Awards will air on Sept. 17 at 8/7c on CBS. It will be hosted by late night show star Stephen Colbert. Check out the complete list of 2017 Emmy Awards nominees here.
