Jamie Dornan Saves Charlie Hunnam From 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Trauma

Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam finally revealed why he quit the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, implying that Jamie Dornan replacing him in the role was a “bitter pill.” After all, Dornan skyrocketed to fame after starring in the romance flick, and more importantly, he apparently rescued his fellow actor from the mess as a result of a breached contract.

Before Dornan came on board, the franchise had a deal with Hunnam as he was chosen to star as Christian Grey in the trilogy. He was involved in the film for just a few weeks before he decided to withdraw. People can certainly remember the uproar when Hunnam was cast in the romance drama and then backed out.

Charlie Hunnam Revealed Why He Quit Fifty Shades of Grey

In a previous interview, the English actor maintained his stance that he left the franchise due to his conflicting schedules. But then, it turned out that the reason was a little more complicated that it seemed to be. If fans were wondering why he ditched a potential spot, Hunnam offered a bit of information about it.

Hunnam explained that breaching a contract so soon in his Hollywood career could be a catastrophic move. He further confessed that letting the role go was a “bitter pill” for him. He revealed, “I didn’t turn it down. I accepted it and then realized that I wasn’t able to do it. That is where the catastrophe occurred for me. I can laugh about it now but at the time it was very traumatic.”

The 37-year-old hunk went on to explain, “I take my word seriously, so if I say I’m going to do something, I want to follow it through. I was in an awkward position, not being a particularly powerful entity in Hollywood, and breaking a contract could have had significant consequences.” He added that it was a “very difficult period” in his life and he was “going through some very hard emotional things.”

He also said in another interview, “I try to be sensitive to the fact that we’re doing something intimate, but also keep a clear boundary because I’m in a very committed relationship, and I’m also cognizant that it’s not my girlfriend’s favorite part of my job.” Hunnam pointed out that sex scenes were not his “favorite thing to do.”

Jamie Dornan Rescued Charlie Hunnam From Trauma

Fortunately, Fifty Shades became a massive success even without Charlie Hunnam. And despite terrible reviews from critics, the first two installments in the trilogy performed strongly at the box office. The network already released a trailer for the third film. It features Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson’s characters adapting to married life – with things bound to get explosive once again.

Since Hunnam exited from the franchise, Dornan took all the trauma and perks of playing the role. Fans romantically linked him to his partner Johnson, with rumors claiming that he and his wife were having marital problems. Even he himself admitted that if there will be another book that gets adapted into a film, he is not keen on returning to the screens as Christian – reiterating that he is done filming Fifty Shades “forever.”
