Milo Ventimiglia Almost Had His Own 'Gilmore Girls' Spin Off About Jess

Milo Ventimiglia revealed that he thought of quitting acting on multiple occasions. Fortunately, he did not, and This is Us now has the best father ever. But what made Ventimiglia think of giving up acting?

The TV series star admitted that he almost quit his career in Hollywood on three different occasions. One of those was after Gilmore Girls Season 3 wrapped up in 2002. The third installment of the comedy/drama concluded Jess Mariano’s (Ventimiglia) storyline as he and Rory (Alexis Bledel) split before she left for college.

But since Jess became a fan favorite, the show pitched a Gilmore Girls spinoff for him. However, it did not materialize. In an episode of The Jess Cagle Interview, the 39-year-old star said he was fed up after a failed attempt to do a Gilmore Girls spin-off.

I couldn’t catch a break to lock on to some work and be creative … I wasn’t there yet in other people’s eyes. So I was just like, ‘Look, I feel that I’m there and if you don’t see it then sorry, f— you.’ So I basically was like, ‘I’m gonna go,’ ” he said.

The This is Us actor said he thought of switching careers out of frustration at the time and tried to be an auto mechanic. “In Southern California there’s this auto school and it’s advertised ‘Everybody needs mechanics, because they need those cars fixed’ and I’m like, ‘That’s a job that’s going to be in demand, so why don’t I learn more than I already know about cars and professionally fix cars,’ ” Ventimiglia recalled.

Milo Ventimiglia’s Life After Gilmore Girls

Just before he turned his back on Hollywood, he landed a role in Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa and in the NBC series Heroes. The TV show somewhat made him stay for the next seven years. However, his third career crisis occurred after Heroes was canceled in 2010.

Ventimiglia said it totally broke his spirit and almost sent him out of the country. He thought of moving to Italy and working on a farm there. “I was like, ‘I’m gonna sell everything, I’m going to fly to Rome, I’m gonna buy a motorcycle, I’m going to ride around until I can find a farm I can work on. I’m going to shave my head, I’m gonna grow a beard and I’m going to work on a farm’ … just lead a very different life very far away,” he said.

Again, before he left the country, Ventimiglia landed a lead role in NBC’s hit drama This is Us. In the series, Ventimiglia played the role of Jack Pearson, a loving family man. So far, this is the biggest break Ventimiglia had on television.

Milo Ventimiglia on Coming Back to Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Season 2

Gilmore Girls brought him back in a guest appearance capacity in Season 4 up to the seventh season. In the recent revival of the series on Netflix, Ventimiglia also had a cameo. Fans would like to see him in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Season 2. However, Ventimiglia already said he would not be returning should another season happen in the future. Netflix has yet to confirm if Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Season 2 will take place.

Meanwhile, Ventimiglia is definitely coming back to This is Us Season 2. In the upcoming installment, the cause of Jack Pearson’s death will finally be revealed. Ventimiglia previously teased that Jack and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) marriage is on the rocks and they will need to get it back on track in the upcoming season.
