The highly-anticipated feature film adaptation of the much loved Madeline L’Engle novel is already in the post-production process, and now, the world can not get over the appearance of Oprah in A Wrinkle in Time. Disney’s newly-released trailer showed the first look of the renowned host as a powerful sage.
Disney Released the First A Wrinkle in Time Trailer
The franchise did the honors to drop the first footage of the film during the D23 Expo 2017 on Saturday. Ava DuVernay, the respected director of the groundbreaking documentary 13th and Selma, is handling the movie which will star Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Chris Pine as Alex Murry, Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, and newcomer Strom Reid as Meg Murry.
The upcoming fantasy epic is about an ordinary teenager who whisked on a cosmic adventure to find her missing scientist dad. Three chimerical celestial beings – philosophizing Mrs. Who, inquisitive Mrs. Whatsit, and wizened Mrs. Which – help Meg on her quest.
In the newly-released trailer, Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams scores as Alex (Pine) explains the mechanics of time travel and space travel. When his discoveries leave him the target of abduction, it is up to Meg (Reid) to save the day. The clip concludes with sweeping action scenes and just enough plot to entice, but ultimately leave viewers guessing.
Oprah in A Wrinkle in Time as Powerful Sage Mrs. Which
Over the weekend, the 63-year-old host was honored as a Disney legend. When she accepted the award, Winfrey spoke about the studio’s impact on her life. She said of her almost eternal-running show which aired from 1986 to 2011, “Disney, ABC 7 let me be me.” But this time around, she is slated to depict a new character in the form of a powerful sage.
The role of Oprah in A Wrinkle in Time is the most legendary guru of all with a knack for materialization. The director said, “I mean, when you’re trying to cast the wisest woman in the world, what’s the question? You go and you call her and you’re glad you have her number on speed dial.”
DuVernay went on to explain, “[The character] is so much of what she teaches and shared through her shows over the years, through her magazine and own, about owning your light and conquering darkness and how we have to power ourselves through this life in a certain way and look out for each other.”
She also said that Winfrey really dropped into the role so well, adding that “her Oprah-ness is really helpful.” Fans can watch Oprah in A Wrinkle in Time when it hits the theaters on March 9, 2018.
