Robert Downey Jr. Talks Leaving Marvel, 'Iron Man' Role Soon: 'Before it's Embarrassing'

Robert Downey Jr. apparently wants out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This may come as a surprise to some fans, but it’s worth noting that Downey Jr. has remained in the MCU the longest out of any other star in the franchise. His first solo Iron Man film was what kickstarted the MCU, after all. With that said, perhaps the real-life Tony Stark deserves to put his MCU life to rest once and for all.

Robert Downey Jr. Wants to Quit the MCU While He Still Can

Downey Jr. is currently in the middle of filming Avengers: Infinity War. He is still slated to appear in the still-untitled sequel, Avengers 4. However, his future in the MCU after the aforementioned Avengers films remains unknown. Notably, Downey Jr. is also at the end of the line in terms of his contract with Marvel. As such, Avengers 4 may actually be the last time fans may see him onscreen as Iron Man.

Such a notion is further reinforced by the actor’s recent statements regarding his time — and what’s left of it — in the MCU. He shares that although many deem his role as Tony Stark to be fitting for him, he still wants to be able to walk away from the character “before it’s embarrassing.”

He explains, “Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”

Fans last saw Downey Jr. return as Iron Man in the MCU with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. But, audiences have not seen him in another solo Iron Man film since 2013’s Iron Man 3. Despite his growing interest in wanting to quit the MCU once and for all, Downey Jr. keeps coming back for more, it seems. In why this is so, the actor explains that it all lies in the people he gets to work with.

“It’s this cyclical thing I could have said when the first Avengers came out: ‘It’s never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop,’” he says. “But to me it’s always about people and opportunities, like the (Civil War and Avengers directors Anthony and Joe) Russos, who I adore.”

Robert Downey Jr. in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Viewers will catch Downey Jr. as Tony Stark yet again in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film will see the continued development of Tony Stark’s working relationship with Peter Parker (Tom Holland). The movie takes place after the events of Civil War. It also stars Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Michael Keaton.
