Fans will still have to wait a little longer for the Winds of Winter release date as George RR Martin confirmed it definitely wouldn’t be out this year. However, he gave a glimpse of hope to fans that the long-awaited novel could finally be in bookstores next year. Winds of Winter may also drop alongside another book.
On his official LiveJournal blog post, Martin shot down reports about the delay in the Winds of Winter release date. There were rumors that he is either done writing his next book but chooses not to release it, or he hasn’t written a page of the novel. Martin stressed, “I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question). I still have good days and bad days, and that’s all I care to say.”
Then he hinted of possible two books in 2018. “Whether ‘Winds‘ or the first volume of [Targaryen history book] ‘Fire and Blood‘ will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018 … and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream … ,” he said.
Winds of Winter is the sixth installment from GRRM’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. It is where Game of Thrones Season 6 is supposed to be based upon. GRRM last released the most recent installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire saga in 2011.
Winds of Winter Delays
The Winds of Winter release date has been delayed for years. It was first expected to hit bookstores in 2015, before the GoT Season 6 premiere in 2016. Then again, many anticipated its release in 2016 and also this year.
Amidst the delays, George RR Martin admitted having problem meeting deadlines. “I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out,” he wrote on his blog in 2016. Earlier this year, he said he also thought the Winds of Winter release date could be this year. “I think it will be out this year. But hey, I thought the same thing last year,” he said.
GRRM’s Other Upcoming Books
Martin is writing two more novels that have connections to Game of Thrones. The Book of Swords is a new fantasy anthology that includes a story titled The Sons of the Dragon. It is a chronicle of the reigns of Aegon the Conqueror’s two sons, Aenys I Targaryen and Maegor the Cruel.
Apparently, it is for GRRM’s fandom who cannot get enough of his fake histories of Westeros. Martin added that The Book of Swords has never been published in any form. He, however, did read some passages from the novel at a couple of conventions.
GRRM said since they have tons of ideas for the anthology, they decided to publish the book in two volumes. The first of the two should be out in late 2018 or 2019. The sequel, however, is “largely unwritten” and will take much longer, according to Martin. How long? He did not mention.
Moreover, Martin also teased fans might see the return of Ned Stark in his new books. However, it will be the younger Ned. GRRM said the Stark patriarch’s appearance might happen if the second book will carry the history from Aegon III up to Robert’s Rebellion.
