Actress sumita sanyal passes away

Kolkata: Veteran actor Sumita Sanyal, who essayed supporting characters in “Anand” and Satyajit Ray’s “Nayak”, died today at her south Kolkata residence.According to family sources, Sanyal, who was ailing for sometime now, suffered a cardiac arrest around 10.30am and did not survive it.Sanyal was married to film editor Subodh Roy and has a son with him.Sunita has appeared in many Bengali and Hindi films. The most popular were “Anand” opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The actress was admired both for her beauty as well as her elegant screen presence. Some of them were “Sagina Mahato” in which Dilip Kumar was opposite to her in the lead role.She was born Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency. She was named as Suchorita by Director Bibhuti Laha for his film Khokhababur Pratyabartan. Another film was “Kuheli”. Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans”. Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee tweeted: “Saddened to hear about the demise of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace”, he says emotionally, adding that she was one of Hrishida’s favourite actresses with the legendary filmmaker casting her in his 1968 film, Aashirwad, and 1971 drama Guddi.
