NBC vows to air interview with conspiracy theorist Jones

EW has obtained an internal memo from WVIT, which serves the Hartford/New Haven-area market where Sandy Hook Elementary is located. The only NBC television station in CT will not air “Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” this weekend, to protest her interview with Alex Jones, who infuriated victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre by claiming the atrocity never happened.Among those who are calling on NBC not to run the piece are lawyers representing 12 people who lost loved ones in the 2012 school massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.Kelly has called Jones’ claims “revolting” but says there’s value in exposing what he says to the American people. “We have considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal”.Jones, who hosts an Internet radio show, bizarrely claims the parents of the victims could be actors hired to give credence to a government conspiracy to take away people’s guns. He eventually released a video saying he believes children were murdered in the shooting, but said he still didn’t believe the official story. Newtown’s local NBC affiliate has announced that it will not be broadcasting this Sunday’s episode of Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly, after fielding requests to that effect from staff members, viewers, and the families affected by the shooting.”The group can not support Kelly or NBC’s decision to give a platform to Jones and hopes NBC reconsiders its plan to broadcast the interview”, said Nicole Hockley, co-founder and managing director. In a statement on Friday, an NBC spokesperson said the network will still air the interview as planned: “Despite Alex Jones’ efforts to distract from and ultimately prevent the airing of our report, we remain committed to giving viewers context and insight into a controversial and polarizing figure, how he relates to the president of the United States and influences others, and to getting this serious story right”.Additionally, anchor Kevin Nathan is in Washington, DC tonight to cover the Sandy Hook Promise Champions gala.WVIT says it will include a report on the Kelly-Jones interview in its Sunday night 11 p.m. broadcast.
