Preston man arrested over murder of teenager

This was extremely out of character and police began a search.Greater Manchester Police earlier said some of Ellen’s friends had told them she had been last seen at the nature reserve.Thirteen hours after a search was launched for the missing Wigan teen, Higginbottom was found dead in Orrell Water Park with visible wounds to the neck.Ellen was reported missing on Friday after she had failed to return home from Winstanley College, where she studied.Her body was discovered at the town’s Orrell Water Park – where there are two reservoirs surrounded by woodland.DS Howard Millington, from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team, revealed the unnamed teenager had sustained head injuries.He said: “This investigation is by no means over however, we still have a long way to go in piecing together the puzzle”.We are appealing for anyone who may have seen anyone in the area acting suspiciously to get in touch with police as soon as possible.”Don’t worry that you’ll be wasting my time, any bit of information, no matter how small could be vital”.”I must thank the public for their overwhelming support during this investigation so far, we have had lots of people call us with information and we would like to encourage people to do this”.”Our officers will continue to patrol the streets in the area and anyone with any concerns or questions should come and speak to them”.In a statement a Winstanley College spokesman said: “We are deeply shocked and mourning the loss of a wonderful young woman, Ellen Higginbottom”. “Formal identification has yet to take place and we are keeping an open mind at this stage”.The body was found at 2.30am yesterday at nearby Orrell Water Park.
