Venkaiah Naidu is BJP’s candidate for Vice President elections

Urban Development Minister and senior BJP leader Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu was on Monday nominated as the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with BJP Parliamentary Board officially announcing his name “with full consensus”.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Party President Amit Shah, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, J P Nadda, Thawar Chand Gehlot and Ananth Kumar were present in the meeting.Naidu was minister of rural development from 2000 to 2002 in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, and now serves as both the minister of housing and urban poverty alleviation, and information and broadcasting. Though the contest is between him as the ruling NDA candidate and the Congress-led 18 Opposition parties’ candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the outcome of the 5 August polls is probably a foregone conclusion.Unlike the electoral college for the Presidential election, which includes members of state legislatures, the Vice-President is chosen exclusively by Parliamentarians. The former West Bengal Governor will file his nomination tomorrow too.”He is among our most senior leaders”. Shah indicated that he would like the decision before he leaves for Ahmedabad to vote in the Presidential election as a Gujarat MLA on Monday. Moreover, with the BJP government bringing in a host of Bills as Money Bills to bypass Rajya Sabha where they do not have enough numbers, it seems having a favourable head helps the BJP’s cause to manage the Upper House better. As speculated, Venkaiah Naidu has been announced as NDA’s candidate for the post of Vice President. The JD-U had broken ranks with the opposition on the presidential election when it made a decision to support the ruling NDA’s nominee Ram Nath Kovind. He has also represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha. The Vice Presidential election will be held on August 05.Venkaiah Naidu as the BJP leader had supported the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.Venkaiah Naidu is Rajya Saabha MP from Rajasthan and he was earlier parliamentary affairs minister in the Modi government. Nine years later he was anointed the national president of BJP. He recalled that he was the first BJP leader to depart from the hallowed “shakahari” (vegetarian) culinary tradition the party followed in its meetings and served up fish, fowl and meat.
