Nike 'Be True' Flyknit Racer may be Banned in Russia for Supporting LGBT

Nike will be dropping a new shoe design that is inspired by the LGBT community. However, the Nike ‘Be True’ Flyknit Racer might not have a chance to go on sale in Russia as a ban against the shoes is looming.

A Russian conservative lawmaker is campaigning to prohibit the sale of Nike’s new colorway and other apparel that are inspired and supports the LGBT community. St. Petersburg City Duma Deputy Vitaly Milonov has insisted that the sneakers and apparel are “gay propaganda,” which was banned by Russia in 2013.

Milonov is a known conservative and has rallied against the LGBT causes in the past. Though the Nike ‘Be True’ Flyknit Racer is not yet available in Russia, the lawmaker is already lobbying to ban it. He claims that the collection is aimed at teenagers who are susceptible to the “perverted values” of Nike’s pride message.

Meanwhile, Nike has stood behind the cause of its new shoe and other LGBT apparel design. The company has released a statement in response to Milonov’s campaign.

“Nike does not discriminate based on sexual orientation, sex, nationality or age. Nike supports social and cultural diversity and seeks to deliver inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. In Russia, Nike does not request inclusion of any particular products or collections from its partners. The stores decide themselves which products they want to stock,” the company said (via International Business Times).

The former Soviet Union has been a tough place for LGBT people even though in 1993 it had lifted its ban on gay relationships. Apparently, the country still prohibits gay pride parades, arrested LGBT activists, and made anti-LGBT statements.

Nike ‘Be True’ Flyknit Racer Features

The new Flyknit iteration features a black and white colorway with a rainbow Swoosh on the outer side and a solid pink Swoosh in the inner side. It also carries a ‘Be True’ logo on the tongue and finishes with blue and pink insoles.

Nike has made a #BeTrue collection every summer since 2012. Interest in Nike’s LGBT iteration peaked when the company released the ‘Be True’ Nike Sock Dart in 2015. The shoe currently sells for around $400 on the secondary market, Sole Collector noted.
