'Avengers 3: Infinity War': Kevin Feige Not Worried About Robert Downey Jr.'s Retirement

Avengers 3: Infinity War is the next Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to see several of the Avengers back together. However, the film — and its still-untitled sequel — also signifies the end for some of the MCU stars. Most notably, Robert Downey Jr. — who portrays Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU — is already expressing his intentions to retire from his superhero role. Such a prospect has been a long time coming, though. This is especially because Downey Jr. was there from the very beginning of the MCU.

Most notably, Robert Downey Jr. — who portrays Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU — is already expressing his intentions to retire from his superhero role. Such a prospect has been a long time coming, though. This is especially because Downey Jr. was there from the very beginning of the MCU.

However, how are the folks at Marvel taking to Downey Jr.’s impending departure? Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige speaks out on Downey Jr.’s upcoming retirement from the MCU. As it turns out, Feige isn’t all that stressed out about the actor’s anticipated end as Iron Man.

Avengers 3: Infinity War is the End For Some Avengers

As previous reports reveal, Feige shared that the Infinity War saga will see the end of some Avengers and their respective runs in the MCU. It’s worth noting that besides Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth — who play Steve Rogers/Captain America and Thor, respectively — are also at the tail end of their contracts with Marvel. However, only Downey Jr. has thus far addressed his upcoming retirement from the MCU.

“Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well,” says Downey Jr. “I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”

But what is the MCU without Downey Jr.? The actor is arguably synonymous with his Iron Man role; to have someone else portray the character may be quite the major adjustment. However, this only applies if Iron Man will remain in the MCU even after Downey Jr.’s departure.

Previous speculations hinted at some Avengers dying in the aftermath of the battle against Thanos. As such, there is a possibility of Downey Jr.’s character being killed off. This may even be a gateway for the actor to begin his MCU retirement.

Kevin Feige Isn’t Too Worried About Robert Downey Jr.’s Retirement

Feige shares that although Downey Jr.’s departure is ultimately “inevitable,” it is not something that he has to worry about. At least, anytime soon. After all, there is still a substantial amount of time before the Infinity War saga wraps up. When it does, only then with Feige start to take action.

“Luckily [with] those [next] seven movies we just talked about — Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & the Wasp, Captain Marvel, untitled Avengers 4 and Homecoming 2 — I don’t have to worry about that any time soon,” says Feige.

Will Kevin Feige Leave the MCU?

On the other hand, some fans now worry that Feige himself may step down from Marvel Studios by the time the Infinity War saga concludes. As some netizens point out, there is a possibility of Feige taking over for Kathleen Kennedy upon her departure from Lucasfilm in 2019. This thus poses the potential for Feige to transition from Marvel to the Star Wars franchise. Only time will tell as to whether or not this may indeed be the case for the future of both the MCU and the Star Wars franchise.
