'Avengers 3: Infinity War' Spoilers: Steve Rogers May No Longer Be Captain America

Avengers 3: Infinity War will see some changes to several characters. There may be upgrades in hardware, such as with Spider-Man’s new suit. On the other hand, physical changes may manifest, as is the case with Black Widow’s new hair and Captain America’s bearded face. Changes may even delve into a whole other degree with a shift in a superhero identity. This may be the case for one Avenger if recent speculations are to be believed.

As per reports, some fans now theorize that Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, may not be known as the “Star Spangled Man” by the time he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Infinity War. Though he previously dropped the mantle in Captain America: Civil War, the upcoming Avengers sequel may actually see him taking on a new moniker altogether.

New Identity For Steve Rogers in Avengers 3: Infinity War

Previous reports divulge that Steve sports a beard in Infinity War. This comes after Chris Evans — who portrays the aforementioned character in the MCU — was spotted with scruffy facial hair several times while on location for Infinity War filming. Speculations claim that the beard is part of Steve’s efforts to remain undercover after the events of Civil War. However, recent developments now suggest that Steve may adapt a new identity entirely.

Rumors hint that Infinity War will see Steve’s evolution from Captain America to Nomad. Some fans may be aware that Nomad serves as Steve’s alternate identity outside of his Captain America title. In the comics, Steve takes on this cover after becoming disillusioned by the federal government and its involvement with the Secret Empire. Infinity War may explore this new identity of Steve’s, especially after he abandoned his signature shield at the end of Civil War.

However, it’s worth noting that speculations thus far only claim that Infinity War will simply pay an ode to the Nomad character. As such, despite Steve’s ongoing transformation, the Nomad costume may not actually see the light of day. Marvel has yet to address such rumors, but some fans are hopeful that Nomad may make his MCU debut in the upcoming Avengers flick.

Who Will be the Next Captain America?

It’s worth noting that Evans is nearing the end of his contract with Marvel Studios. Infinity War and its sequel may mark his ultimate end in the MCU. Recent statements by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige further reinforce such a notion. Reportedly, Feige revealed that the Infinity War saga would mark the end of the line for some of the Avengers. Considering Evans is at the tail end of his contract, he may be one star who will soon make his exit from the MCU.

Should this be the case, then the Captain America mantle may either be taken to the grave or passed on to another character. Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, is one candidate to consider. He does become Captain America in the comics, after all.

On the other hand, another potential Captain America successor is Steve’s best friend, Bucky Barnes. Bucky assumes the Captain America identity after Steve’s presumed death in the comics. The MCU may adapt this plot point, especially since Sebastian Stan — who portrays Bucky himself — still has several films to go as per his contract.
