Stan Lee is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Several fans know of his history in the MCU and films starring Marvel characters, at that. Lee often makes cameo appearances in Marvel films, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War will naturally feature Lee himself in a special cameo role. Details on how his appearance in Infinity War will play out have yet to be elaborated on, but a recent photo on the set of the film shows Lee surrounded by several of the Avengers.
Stan Lee in Avengers: Infinity War
A new photo on the set of Infinity War shows Lee in the company of the film’s cast and crew. Notable appearances include the Russo brothers — who are the directors behind the movie — and Tom Holland, who portrays Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) are also present in the photo.
The set picture also shows a green screen, which may hint at what Lee’s cameo may involve. Some may recall his cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which was set in space. Notably, his recent cameo in the Guardians sequel actually sheds some light on the nature of his character in the MCU.
To recount, Lee can be spotted retelling anecdotes of his time on Earth to the Watchers in Vol. 2. This alone teases at who — or what — Lee’s character truly is in the MCU. There are thus speculations that Lee’s character may be closely associated with the Watchers and, as such, may not heed to the continuity of the MCU’s canon timeline. Regardless, Lee’s cameo is definitely something fans are keeping their eyes on.
What Else to Expect From Avengers: Infinity War
Other spoilers regarding the film hint at an element of time travel being put into use. Previously, another photo on the movie set showed Downey Jr. and Cumberbatch — alongside Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) and Benedict Wong (Wong) — in the middle of city wreckage. Interestingly, the partnership between Tony and Doctor Strange actually spurs some speculations amongst fans.
As some netizens theorize, Infinity War may see Tony and Doctor Strange at the end of the battle against Thanos. However, the theory suggests that the Avengers may reach the battle’s finale in defeat. This would thus prompt Tony and Doctor Strange to travel back in time in order to better prepare themselves — and the rest of the Avengers — for the showdown against Thanos.
Such a theory remains unproven in the meantime. Regardless, it is an interesting prospect to consider. The theory would also help set up the next era of Marvel films. This is especially since the Infinity War saga is the culmination of several stories and films in the MCU.
