Robert Downey Jr. Returns for 'Iron Man 4' After 'Avengers 3' if Story is 'Well Thought Out'

Could a potential Iron Man 4 be in our midst? Robert Downey Jr., who portrays Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), may return to his superhero mantle even after Avengers 3: Infinity War and its sequel. Downey Jr. continues to come back time and time again to the MCU even beyond the Iron Man trilogy. Could this mean that the actor is open to returning as Iron Man even after the Infinity War saga wraps up?

Will Robert Downey Jr. Return For an Iron Man 4?

The prospect of a potential Iron Man 4 seems almost too good to be true. The folks at Marvel have not addressed such news. However, fans continue to remain hopeful for such a project. Regardless, Downey Jr. is one MCU star who is open to continuing his involvement with Marvel. That is, so long as the project at hand meets his standards.

As Downey Jr. explains, “What happens to me is that things are presented to me that are really well thought out by folks that have been doing this correctly for a really long time, and I go like, ‘Check.’” The actor’s statements do not necessarily confirm a fourth Iron Man film in the works. However, it does suggest that Downey Jr. may consider remaining in the MCU even after Infinity War — perhaps even for a possible Iron Man 4. That is if it is “really well thought out.”

It’s worth noting that Downey Jr. is already at the end of his contract with Marvel. But, his recent comments now give hope that fans may see him continue assuming the Iron Man mantle in the years to come. Notably, Downey Jr. involves himself in other Marvel projects outside of the Avengers and Iron Man films.

As some fans may recall, Downey Jr. played a vital catalyst in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Initially, the third Captain America film was going to feature Downey Jr. in a much smaller role. However, the actor pushed for more involvement from his character in the story.

The upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming also features Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. The extent of his character’s involvement this time around, however, has yet to be clarified. What several outlets do know is that Downey Jr.’s character will not see a return for the Homecoming sequel. Fans will thus see him in the next Avengers films instead.

End of the Line for Some Superheroes in Infinity War

Previous reports reveal that some characters will see their end as of Infinity War and its still untitled sequel. The characters in question were not disclosed. But, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige shares that some of the MCU characters will have their stories wrapped up by the next Avengers films.

Interestingly, Downey Jr. may be one of the actors who may say goodbye to the MCU after Infinity War and its sequel. He, along with Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor), is already at the near end of his Marvel contract. As such, the Infinity War saga will see the culmination of several stories in the MCU timeline thus far.
