A new Outlander video featuring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe encourages everyone to share their own stories for the Lost Love Campaign. However, many fans were disappointed and slammed the onscreen couple – furiously asserting that the two might only laugh at their stories just like what they “supposedly” did when the actor said he received an awkward fan letter.
The time travel show, which is based on Diana Gabaldon’s famous book series, has gained millions of fans worldwide. Many could relate to the show, which focuses on two people finding each other across great distances of time and space. It is an epic love story, so much so that Starz wants to look at other “lost love” stories to further promote the upcoming installment in some way.
Outlander Stars Encourage Fans to Share their “Lost Love” Stories
The network launched their Lost Love campaign so that dedicated viewers can also share some of their similar stories. Recently, a video featuring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe was released online to push the initiative further. Starz definitely knows that they have a moving and inspiring series, and some people out there may see their own story in what Jamie and Claire went through.
In the promotional clip, Heughan explained that Outlander Season 3 will see “Jamie and Claire find themselves living in separately, centuries apart, and their lost love is always in their minds.” Balfe chimed in, “We know from the many comments we received that some of you experienced something similar, something just as moving.”
The Scottish star said, “So we’d like to know more about it and tell us your story of the ones that got away, whether it’s a true love, a friend, or a family member. How you met?” Balfe added, “Why you lost touch.” Then Heughan quipped, “And if you ever think about a reunion.” The actress went on to encourage, “We really want to know more about the real stories that you’ve experienced that make Outlander so relatable to you.”

Fans Slammed Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe for Lost Love Campaign
Although Starz’s aim is to bring the Outlander community closer by sharing their own stories, many are not glad about it – to the point of slamming Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. The internet backlash came out following the interview of the actors with Entertainment Weekly.
The onscreen couple and their co-stars stopped by for a quick discussion about Outlander Season 3 and some other details. When the host asked them about an awkward fan encounter, Heughan shared that he and Balfe received a fan letter stating that they lied about their relationship. The cast members laughed at what he said, but little did he know that many of his fans were left disappointed.

Several fans flocked together to comment on the Lost Love promotional clip, with one saying, “And then will you or Sam use the information to make fun of fans at the next interview?I would honestly be interested in your reply.” Another chimed in, “This is a joke right? You just mocked a fan letter and now you want more? I can’t believe how thoughtless you are to post this a few days after that mockery of a scripted interview.”
An angry Twitter follower commented, “Does the winning letter writer get publicly made fun of again at a fan convention?? I’m sure we’ll all get right on this!” Another wrote, “Not a well thought out promotion. I also doubt there was a fan letter saying they lied about being a couple. They’ve never said they are.”
Amid the hate comments, there are some who defended Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. “They did not mock any fan only commented on the content, they always gave a lot of attention and affection to all the fans,” a follower said. Either way, fans should understand that the actors have strengths and weaknesses, too.
