Jio Phone: Idea 4G Phone in the works, priced around Rs. 2500

The entry-level phone will allow its users to do unlimited voice calls, enjoy free data and SMS at a monthly recharge of Rs 153.And this way, a new dimension of telecom rivalry open up in India. “Jio is also ready with plan B if the uptake of JioPhone is not as per expectation”.To counter Reliance Jio, JioPhone, India’s third largest telecom operator Idea Cellular is also planning to launch its phone at Rs 2500.He said, “One of the concerns is about net neutrality”.”It [JioPhone] will not allow most of the apps which a customer prefers and the choice of apps may not work because it is forcing consumers to use an individual operator’s apps”, Idea Cellular’s Managing Director Himanshu Kapania said during a conference call.Jio stormed into the highly competitive telecom sector last September with a six-month promotional offer of free voice and data, which has helped it mobilise 125 million users, and is now looking to hit it big with this new phone. But, he questioned whether Internet users will opt for this handset, as they can not be used to access Whatsapp and other Android based apps.Kapania further said it remains to be seen as to how the proposed Jio phone, which does not have features like a smartphone, serves those wanting to browse the Internet.Zeebiz had earlier reported that the newly launched JioPhone will force other phone makers to up their game and upgrade the current feature phones that mostly run on 2G technology to 4G enabled phones.Idea Cellular, owned by the Aditya Birla group, today announced that it is working to launch an affordable 4G LTE feature phone, starting at a price of Rs. 2500.In the past, the telecom operators had worked with handset makers when they were challenged by Reliance Infocomm’s cheaper handsets, he noted. The phone will effectively cost zero along with a security deposit of Rs 1500 which is refundable within 3 years. He said, “When the customer is given the freedom of choice of being able to use multiple networks as and when he desires, our belief is that the customer will choose the freedom of choice over locked handsets”.We will keep you updated as we receive more information.
