Mayor Eric Garcetti open to Elon Musk’s tunnel solution for LA’s traffic

The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s latest transportation endeavour, has a singular goal: to change the way we travel across congested cities of the future by building a series of networked tunnels underground. From there, the trolley carrying the auto will enter the tunnels and travel to their destination at speeds of up to 200kph.Musk said he had a “promising conversation” with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti regarding the creation of a system of roadways underneath the city. The tweet does not signify an official statement of support for the network, but rather seems to be a foot in the door for Musk and the team at The Boring Company which seeks to secure permits for tunneling outside of Hawthorne, home to SpaceX HQ.But Musk acknowledged Sunday he is less concerned about the technology required to build the tunnels, and more anxious about gaining permits from cities.Musk also included a link to an ABC interview that Garcetti had, where he expressed interest in employing several solutions to the city’s unbelievable traffic congestion. Instead of a classic subway train or an underground road, though, Musk is imagining a network of tunnels in which cars and pedestrians are carried on fast-moving sleds. That means gaining permission to dig a hole in Southern California from LAX to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood, and Sherman Oaks.Musk eventually hopes to create a tunnels to cover all of greater Los Angeles. Musk said getting the necessary permits will be harder than developing the technology to build the tunnels.
