Vergne wins race, Di Grassi takes Formula E title in season finale

Jean-Eric Vergne will be hopeful of getting on the podium again in Montreal after he qualified third, just ahead of Nick Heidfeld. The Hong Kong e-prix extravaganza will be held for the second year running on December 2 and 3 and will feature the likeable Brazilian, whose brilliant driving skills were in evidence in the streets of Central’s Harbourfront, where he worked his way up the grid from second last to finish second behind race victor, Sebastien Buemi, of Switzerland. To make matters worse his title rival Lucas di Grassi will start in fifth, making it an nearly impossible task for Buemi to make up the eighteen point deficit he faces. Buemi had gone to the Montreal races with a 10-point advantage but had a series of problems starting with a crash in the second practice session.Buemi will now fade to 18 points shy of di Grassi after the FIA stewards confirmed his second auto was found to have been underweight.Lucas di Grassi is the new FIA Formula E champion after taking a solid seventh place in the Hydro-Quebec Montreal ePrix.Buemi, the defending champion and holder of second place in the drivers ‘ championship before the race on Sunday, was struck in the rear by Felix da Costa from the first corner of the race, damaging a piece of his auto. “When you see the speed we had this year, to not win the championship is a bit hard to accept”.”I’ve no regrets at all with my performance, I think I’ve done a good job”, Buemi told Autosport. I had to do one race with a broken fibula, and we had luck in races in Hong Kong and Mexico.”This adventure began three years ago, recalled di Grassi“.”This season was our toughest I would say”.Lucas di Grassi is the third different driver to win the Formula E title after Nelson Piquet in season 1 and Sébastien Buemi in season 2.”The circuit – like always – can always be improved”, he said a year ago. This meant that Renault e.dams kept up its wonderful record of having scored a point in every Formula E race but more importantly, that for the third season in a row it secured the teams’ championship. Mahindra Racing finished third with 190 points.Di Grassi, who won only two races to Buemi’s six, was tearful at the finish after a dream come true. “I’m so proud of my team and myself”.The official FIA communication also detailed “that there was insufficient time to weigh the auto after the rebuild and before the race, even though the weighing platform schedule had been increased by 30 minutes by the Technical Delegate”.Rosenqvist finished second ahead of a challenging Jose Maria Lopez of Virgin Racing.”Our vehicle was the least competitive when you take it season by season since the start of the championship but we still managed to do it”.
