76ers rookie Markelle Fultz suffers left ankle injury

Philadelphia’s Markelle Fultz, the 2017 No. 1 pick, had to be carried to the locker room during his Las Vegas Summer League debut after sustaining a sprained left ankle during the third quarter of a Saturday night game against Golden State. While Fultz’s performance prior to the injury wasn’t quite as impressive as his Utah Summer League dominance in two games, he turned in some highlight-reel plays. As the point guard was looking to block a layup in the lane, his left ankle rolled awkwardly as he went up to the air, and Fultz was in pain immediately after landing. He was unable to put any weight on it as he was helped off the court. He did not return to the game. He was replaced by Brandon Austin. He averaged 20.0 points and 3.0 assists during the two games he played.Minutes later, the ESPN broadcast showed a video of a wheelchair being brought to the 76ers’ locker room for Fultz, who’s the fifth top 10 pick by the 76ers in the last five years. It left everyone thinking, “Oh no, not again”, including Joel Embiid.Fultz’s injury marks the latest stroke of bad luck for the Sixers when it comes to their first-round draft picks. Ben Simmons, the 2016 No. 1 overall pick, missed his entire rookie season with a foot injury.
