Diamondbacks bolster offense in trade for Tigers All-Star JD Martinez

The Detroit Tigers are sending outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.Martinez is hitting.305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBIs so far in 2017.With Boston’s offense struggling, the Red Sox had reportedly been interested in adding Martinez’s bat.In return, the D-backs are sending third baseman Dawel Lugo, shortstop Sergio Alcantar and shortstop Jose King to the Tigers.Martinez has played in seven Major League Baseball seasons – his first three with the Houston Astros and his last four with the Tigers.At 53-39, the D-Backs now hold the top wild card spot in the National League.Lugo, 22, was acquired from Toronto two seasons ago in a deal for Cliff Pennington and was rated by mlb.com as the organization’s fourth-ranked prospect.Arizona (53-39) entered Tuesday’s action a half-game in front of the Colorado Rockies for the first wildcard and 5.5 ahead of the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Cubs are six games behind Arizona for a wild card spot.
