Kristaps Porzingis trade: Knicks believe Lauri Markkanen can replace Latvian forward

The NBA trade rumors surrounding the New York Knicks and Kristaps Porzingis have reached critical mass, with the team apparently determined to sell off the talented big man – which could come at a huge cost to the Knicks.NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Frank Ntilikina at the 2017 NBA Draft.Marc Stein of ESPN reports the Celtics “remain in pursuit”.Shortly after he was chosen by the Sixers with the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s draft, Sixers forward and friend of Porzingis Anzejs Pasecniks gave a glimpse into what Porzingis is thinking after being dangled by the Knicks. Still, the Porzingis camp was caught off guard that the Knicks were even entertaining trade offers.Jackson is said to be interested in Arizona forward Lauri Markkanen, a 7-foot Finnish product whose game has been compared to that of Porzingis’.The Knicks have been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past few months. While he did not work out for the Knicks because of his team’s playoff run in France, he interviewed with Jackson and Knicks Coach Jeff Hornacek on Wednesday.Since he skipped his exit meeting with the organization in April, Porzingis’ future in NY has been cloudy.Though Woj and ESPN’s Ian Begley both clarified the Knicks were simply fielding calls, and not actively shopping the star Latvian, it’s a bad look for team president Phil Jackson and the organization regardless. It is so hard to try and analyze the potential logic behind this situation (from a basketball stand point) to the readers because I think it is just an absolutely insane notion. They’ve been this way for decades, and adding Jackson to the mix has only made matters worse. But the perennial All-Star has a no-trade clause so he has to approve any trade. There is absolutely zero circumstances where this trade ends up being beneficial to the Knicks. The situation with Porzingis surely will raise some eyebrows as well for how Jackson handles his marquee players. But Porzingis is clearly the future of the Knicks franchise.Others noted that the National Basketball Association trade rumors could spell a very dark future for the New York Knicks, who have not seen a player as promising as Porzingis in quite some time. “He loves the city and he loves the fans and he wants to win with this team”. “If he’s going to be traded, he’s going to play out his contract and decide his future on his own”.
