Real Madrid ‘absolutely convinced’ of Ronaldo innocence in tax fraud accusations

Prosecutors in Madrid have filed a complaint to a court in Pozuelo de Alarcon in which they accuse the Real Madrid star of a “voluntary” and “conscious” breach of his tax obligations. In December a year ago, GestiFute published details of Ronaldo’s £191m assets in response to allegations of tax evasion.Spanish prosecutors accused Real Madrid football star Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday of evading €14.8m (US$ 16.6m) in taxes, the Guardian reported. Also Wednesday, Real Madrid issued a statement saying that it was convinced Ronaldo “will demonstrate his complete innocence”.In 2016, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who for the last decade has vied with Ronaldo for the title of world’s best footballer, was fined $2.3 million for defrauding the Spanish tax authorities. The richest sportsperson in the world has been accused of evading tax of 14.7m euros (£13m; $16m) from 2011 to 2014.The four counts of tax fraud were based on a report sent to prosecutors by Spain’s tax agency AEAT.The statement said the Portuguese became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and, in November 2011, opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in the country. The prosecution said Ronaldo had taken advantage of a corporate structure created in 2010 that served to hide the iconic player’s income derived from his image rights. The company owned by Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, Gestifute, strongly denied the claims in a lengthy statement released on their website late on Tuesday night. The prosecutor goes on to state that Ronaldo “intentionally” did not reveal income of $31.8 million earned from the sale of image rights from 2015-20 to another company located in Spain. In Ronaldo’s case, he is accused of having diverted some €150m of advertising revenue through a shell company in the British Virgin Islands.Do you think Ronaldo will eventually be acquitted of any charges?
