Rory McIlroy dismisses Social Media criticism after missing US Open cut

ERIN, Wis. – Rory McIlroy fired back at fellow major champion Steve Elkington on Twitter on Friday night after the Australian golfer said the Northern Irishman “was bored playing golf” due to having plenty of money in the bank.McIlroy was in no mood for the abuse though and destroyed Elkington, and his bad grammar, with his response. However, that didn’t stop Elkington passing comment about where McIlroy’s head is at and, after noticing it on Twitter, the 28-year-old took things into his own hands. He would have expected the criticism to come in from the usual sources but one surprise was a weird Twitter rant from an Australian professional golfer named Steve Elkington.Rory McIlroy had a disgusting first and second round at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. McIlroy, while correcting Elkington’s spelling, pointed out that Nicklaus didn’t earn much money as a player, hence his golf course design business. The Ulsterman has won $35.5 million on the PGA Tour alone, almost 41 times what Elkington won over his career. The US Open was only his seventh appearance of the year, following two lay-offs caused by a rib injury plus a few weeks away from golf to celebrate his wedding to American beauty Erica Stoll. The top 18 players on the halfway leaderboard were all looking to make a breakthrough into the big time, with English duo Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood sharing the 36-hole lead alongside Americans Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman on seven under par.
