Saul Niguez extends contract with Atletico Madrid

Midfielder Saul Niguez has signed a new nine-year contract with Atletico Madrid that will keep him at the La Liga club until June 2026.Saul has been at Atletico until 2008, and the midfielder is now committed to the capital outfit for the next nine years.However, in handing Saul a nine-year deal, Atletico are again going against Federation Internationale de Football Association regulations which states: “The maximum length of a contract shall be five years”.The 22-year-old joined the club’s academy in 2007 and was already under a long-term deal.The Spanish playmaker has emerged as one of the most exciting European talents in recent memory, and he was a key player during Atletico’s Champions League run last season.Saul had always been linked with a move to Barca, with Manchester United also reportedly interested in bringing him to the Premier League, but Atleti was able to persuade the Spain worldwide to commit his future to the club.Niguez says, “I am happy at Atletico because we are a family and there is no better place to be”.Niguez played in the European Under-21 Championship with Spain, which lost the final on Friday to Germany 1-0, and the midfielder was the top scorer of the tournament with five goals.”I want to thank all my colleagues and coaching staff for their daily help to be the player that I am”.”We should feel happy for the agreement we reached because he is such a great player and there are no limits to his growth”.
