Thomas shoots 63, trails Harman by 1 in US Open

Robert Streb was the last golfer to shoot 63 at the majors during the 2016 US PGA Championship.Thomas was one of those, in a three-way tie for second, along with Brooks Koepka and England’s Tommy Fleetwood, just a shot behind Harman. The top 60 and ties make the cut at the U.S. Open.Johnny Miller owned the previous best round of eight-under 63 set at the 1973 US Open at Oakmont.Saturday, there were 18 rounds in the 60s at the par-72 Erin Hills.Jamie Lovemark, Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes, meanwhile, are a shot further back from the leaders. Without Spieth, McIlroy, Day or Johnson to compete with him at the top of the leaderboard, there will never be a better time than now for Fowler to win his first major.Thomas, however, is not alone in that pursuit. He clawed that back with a birdie on the 12th, draining a six-foot putt but was soon in trouble on the 13th, three-putting for bogey.Fowler will be in the third-to-last group Sunday afternoon with reigning Players Championship victor Si Woo Kim.A three-time victor on the PGA Tour this season, Thomas also joined the exclusive “59” club by breaking 60 at the Sony Open, but he may have saved his best for Father’s Day weekend and his quest for his first major crown. However, after dropping another shot on the 15th, Casey regained his composure superbly to birdie the 17th and 18th, the latter being the second longest hole in major history at 676 yards.”It was close and my dad called me and said ‘do you want to go?’ And I said ‘heck yeah!'” Perschke said.Amazingly it could have been even better if not for bogeys on the fourth and 10th, as well as a missed eagle putt from six feet on the 15th after he had driven the green on the 288-yard par four. He said he has a plan in the works for Sunday. It’s all pretty self-explanatory, I guess, in terms of what it means. “But you can’t do anything about that stuff. I think I did a good job with that”.”It’s similar-type stuff – low round and history stuff, ” Thomas said.McIlroy birdied four of his last six holes at Erin Hills to improve seven shots on his opening 78, but still missed the cut by four shots.Thomas revealed he had failed to pack a snack in his bag and that his groaning stomach had been affecting his concentration for a few holes leading up to his eagle putt.Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood all shot matching two-under 70s to join Casey at seven under.Harman, 30, doesn’t seem to be feeling the pressure, though that could change Sunday. “It depends on the weather”. The scores are low, but we’re playing well. Justin did it today. Being in contention in a major is new and I’m excited. “That’s a very real possibility”.
