Vegas holds all the cards with National Hockey League expansion draft list out

McPhee said he had already started to receive calls from GMs on Sunday morning after the lists were revealed with inquiries about prices to acquire an exposed player from another team through Vegas. The names will be made public later that day at the NHL Awards Show at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights and General Manager George McPhee now have a three-day window to build their team from the list of players exposed and also make deals with other National Hockey League teams involving those players. All of these players are unprotected for the expansion draft. You look at the previous expansion lists and the whole thing really was a repository for unwanted toys, which is why, for the most part, it took those franchises years and years to even approach being competitive. Much of the buzz is around what the Vegas Golden Knights will do in the draft and via trades, but there’s plenty going on.Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee had difficulty containing his excitement in anticipation of the NHLs expansion draft list being released.McPhee’s Monday night deadline is to get everything in order with the other 30 teams in the league before he sits down with his team and drafts the first incarnation of the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. There were few surprises on the Blues’ list, which was based on the team option of shielding seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender. If I were a betting man, I would say either Kruger or Pokka but you never know what will happen. For today, the Golden Knights will continue to make deals. But most of all, with the skating game so important I wanted players with speed. The Knights will pick one from each of the other 30 teams in the so-called expansion draft – for a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defencemen and three goaltenders due for submission Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET.“Weve got lots of things lined up, but until we see everything, we dont have anything, ” McPhee said. But since teams weren’t able to protect everyone they would like, Vegas is going to use that against them and try to swing deals to selecting specific players.Among the other forwards available: James Neal (Nashville); Jaromir Jagr (Florida); Patrick Marleau (San Jose), Joe Thornton (San Jose); Carl Hagelin (Pittsburgh); Bryan Rust (Pittsburgh); Alexander Radulov (Montreal); Eric Staal (Minnesota); Jarome Iginla (Los Angeles); Sam Gagner (Columbus); Patrick Sharp (Dallas). Even if the Golden Knights don’t sign any unrestricted free agents by Wednesday night, this serves as a sort of first negotiating advantage for them before the first day of free agency on July 1.Some players left unprotected, such as Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan, carry hefty contracts, which Vegas might shy away from so not to restrict the team’s payroll structure under the salary cap.The NHL salary cap has been set at $75 million for this season in a slight increase over previous year.McPhee seems ready to let the games – and negotiations – begin.Luongo was injured for the second half of the season for Florida and at 38, that has to be worrying for the Golden Knights. Ryan Reaves over David Perron could perhaps be considered the only questionable decision of the bunch, considering Perron was resigned just last summer, and typically plays on the second or third line, with Reaves on the fourth.
