'NCIS' Season 15 Cancellation and Mark Harmon Leaving Rumors: What We Know So Far

NCIS Season 15 is set for a September return though the grapevine has been swirling with unconfirmed claims that the TV series could be canceled. Suggestions are now swirling that a couple of the shows’ resident stars may be leaving.

Mark Harmon is suggested as one of them, hinting that Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs could be leaving due to health reasons. The latest update on that is that the 65-year-old actor is returning for NCIS Season 15. On whether he signs up next season for another run is yet-to-be-known, Blasting News reported.

NCIS Season 15 will have one less star

With Harmon expected to be back next season, there is, however, one figure that will not. This will be Alexandra “Alex” Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) who appeared for only one season (NCIS Season 14), Deadline reported. Quinn previously filled in the void left by Michael Weatherly (Tony DiNozzo) whose character was killed off the season before.

Folks who have been following NCIS already had an inkling of that from happening. In the season finale of the 14th season of NCIS, Alex received a phone call from her mother Marie (Mercedes Ruehl). She revealed having dementia, a plea for her daughter to leave work and watch over her.

Will Mark Harmon last the whole NCIS Season 15

Going back to Harmon, word of him returning is good news for NCIS fans. However, it also begs to ask if he is up to the task for the coming season.

Health has been cited as one of the main reasons and such could result in major changes for NCIS Season 15. He could be seen less or relegated to less field work. At 65, his health has been in question so the task of properly managing him and his character falls on the production folks.

“[Mark] may eventually decide to move on or go in a lesser direction; there’s already a possible thread on the story about him getting a promotion that could take him out of the field to a certain degree,” CarterMatt.com reported.

There are insinuations that Harmon may eventually be headed to retirement. For now, there is no official word on what the actor plans to do. It does, however, place his character under close watch as most make their individual speculations on his future with the TV series.

Adjustments may happen in the coming season to make sure that Harmon’s eventual departure is done properly. Regardless, NCIS Season 15 returns on September 26.
