Alleged baseball practice gunman was James Hodgkinson of Belleville

The gunman who critically wounded a Republican congressman during a shooting rampage at a baseball field was described by neighbors Wednesday as “obnoxious” about politics and “reckless” with his firearms.Hodgkinson opened fire on Republican members of the United States Congress as they practiced for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday morning, authorities said.”I can’t believe he did this, I can’t believe”, she said, adding that her husband left for Washington in March, and she hadn’t seen him since then. Sue Hodgkinson was at work when a reporter called and said her husband was the suspected Republican baseball practice shooter. “Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values”. President Donald Trump said that Hodgkinson is now dead.A senior US official named the gunman as James T Hodgkinson from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois. The FBI was already combing through Hodgkinson’s IL home by the time his identity was released to the public.Senator Bernie Sanders condemned the shooting and said the suspect “apparently volunteered” on his presidential campaign.Hodgkinson also had arrests in his background for a series of minor offenses and at least one more serious matter. The Belleville News-Democrat on Wednesday released several letters to the editor Hodgkinson wrote in 2012 that criticized conservative policies and Republican politicians. At the time police recovered a pocket knife, hair they say was pulled out of his girlfriend’s head and a 12-gauge shotgun at the scene.”I never saw him get mad when people were talking good, bad or ugly about any of the political parties”, Euille told The Associated Press. Steve Scalise and three others at an Alexandria, Virginia, park Wednesday morning (June 15) told reporters she had no idea what her husband had planned and was sorry he did it, according to television stations in St. Louis and other news sources.Hodgkinson was a licensed home inspector in IL according to public records, but his license lapsed last November. In Belleville, residents continued to grapple with the news that one of their own, a man many knew could be quick to anger, but who many said didn’t show outward signs of violence, could have committed the mass shooting.”While the subject is deceased, we continue to actively investigate the shooter’s motives, acquaintances, and whereabouts that led to today’s incident”, Special Agent in Charge Timothy Slater said.
