Ferguson attorney: Brown family settlement $1.5 million

Michael Brown was fatally shot by a white police officer almost three years ago in Ferguson, Missouri, setting off months of protests.Ferguson’s insurance company will pay Brown’s family $1.5 million to settle the wrongful death lawsuit.Interestingly, News 4 reports, Brown’s parents argued that their son’s death “deprived them of financial support through his future potential wages”.U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber approved the secret settlement Tuesday.Brown, who was black, was shot and killed by white Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in August 2014. Similar results have plagued other 2016 cases, including the cop who killed Philando Castile in Minnesota, the female officer who fatally shot Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, and the officers who shot Alton Sterling at point-blank range in Louisiana. The suit claimed that the city’s police culture was “hostile to black residents” and that “Wilson used excessive force”, The Associated Press reported.Ferguson, Jackson and Wilson denied the claims in court documents.Although Wilson was cleared of any wrongdoing because, well, what else are you supposed to do when you’re a cop and a 6 ft 4 in tall 292 pound man attacks you in your vehicle, tries to grab your gun and later comes charging at you, the shooting caused massive, sometimes violent protests and unrest in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis. Under the Obama administration, the Department of Justice investigated the Ferguson police department and noted severe systemic racism within “nearly every aspect of Ferguson’s law enforcement system”.The process is expected to cost more than $2 million and could take years.”Disclosure of the terms of the settlement agreement”, Webber wrote, “could jeopardize the safety of individuals involved in this matter, whether as witnesses, parties, or investigators”. Apollo Carey, the city attorney for Ferguson, told the “St. Louis Post Dispatch” that the city’s insurance company paid that amount “on behalf of multiple defendants”.
