Protesters Arrested During Health Care Bill ‘Die

Some protesters with physical disabilities were dragged away, and witnesses claimed that one officer even dropped a protester in a wheelchair.Dean Heller says he opposes the GOP bill scuttling much of the Obama health care law, complicating the effort by party leaders to guide the measure through the Senate.Facing unanimous Democratic opposition, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must get yes votes from 50 of the 52 GOP senators to avoid a defeat.Around 60 protesters showed up to the protest holding signs bearing anti-AHCA slogans and chanted “Don’t Touch Medicaid”.The people protesting that outcome were physically removed from the area, and footage of the protests and their aftermath shows Capitol Police removing one woman from her wheelchair as they took her away.Protesters were organized by a group called ADAPT, which identifies itself as a nonprofit for people with disabilities.As Capitol Police conferred about what to do, the protesters changed “No cuts to Medicaid!“.The protesters staged a “die-in” in front of the office, with numerous protesters in wheelchairs removing themselves from the chairs then lying down on the floor.Numerous demonstrators, as part of their protest activities, removed themselves from their wheelchairs and lay themselves on the floor, obstructing passage through the hallway and into nearby offices.Alison Barkoff – director of advocacy for the Center for Public Representation – helped organize the protest.ADAPT organizer Bruce Darling said: ‘Our lives and liberty shouldn’t be stolen to give a tax break to the wealthy. Republicans aim to circumvent a committee hearing and vote by bringing the bill directly to the floor before July 4. “They were literally carried from the space out to a separate area”.The 43 people arrested were charged with crowding, obstructing or incommoding. “Many of the people with disabilities were forcible removed”.
