Rep. Steve Scalise upgraded to fair condition, hospital announces

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been upgraded to fair condition as he recovers from a gunshot wound that almost took his life last week.Scalise has been listed in either critical or serious condition in every other release by the hospital, the latest of which was sent on Saturday.”He is now listed in fair condition and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation“, according to the statement from the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise is being treated. Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip early on Wednesday at a baseball field in a suburb of Washington.Scalise, wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican baseball practice, delivered a Father’s Day message Sunday, June 18, through his Twitter account. He had been in critical condition for several days. Rand Paul, the Kentucky Republican who took cover behind a tree, said of the Capitol Police. McHenry tweeted pictures of Vice President Mike Pence donating blood on Tuesday.It remains unclear when he may be released from the hospital.Others injured in the shooting include two Capitol Police officers, Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner; Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods; and Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas. He will be in the hospital for some time.
