Russia warns US after downing of Syrian warplane

The US uses airstrikes to clear the way for the SDF in Syria amid a huge onslaught to re-capture the IS’s self-proclaimed regional capital Raqqa. The U.S. military confirmed that one of its F-18 Super Hornets shot down a Syrian jet that had dropped bombs near the U.S. partner forces SDF.”The shooting down of a Syrian air force jet in Syria’s airspace is a cynical violation of Syria’s sovereignty”, the ministry said in a statement.Iran said the missile strike by its powerful Revolutionary Guard hit Syria’s eastern city of Deir el-Zour on Sunday night and was in retaliation for two attacks in Tehran earlier this month that killed 17 people and were claimed by the Islamic State group. The truce that went into effect Saturday came after some of the worst fighting in months between rebels and pro-government forces.Government forces have also been attacking IS in northern, central and southern Syria, seizing 25,000 square kilometers (9,600 square miles) and reaching the Iraqi border for the first time in years. The incident came as a monitoring group reported the first ground fighting between Syrian government troops and the US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters.During a six-week deployment earlier this year, a Dutch plane refueled 189 coalition plans. An army statement said the pilot of the plane was missing.Russia’s foreign ministry accused Washington of failing to use the hotline before downing the plane near Raqqa, and called for a “careful investigation by the USA command” into the incident “Any flying objects, including planes and drones of the worldwide coalition, discovered west of the Euphrates River will be tracked as aerial targets by Russia’s air defenses on and above ground”, Russian foreign ministry warned. It also issued what appeared a threat to target USA coalition aircraft flying west of the Euphrates River.Areas of northern Syria west of the Euphrates were controlled by IS before Syrian government forces captured majority in recent months. But in April, Russia briefly suspended a hotline meant to prevent midair incidents with the US over Syria after the American military fired 59 missiles at a Syrian air base following a chemical weapons attack that Washington blamed on the Assad government.Russia’s Defence Ministry responded by suspending cooperation with the United States aimed at avoiding air incidents over Syria, where the Russian air force is bombing in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s campaigns against rebels and IS.But while National Defence says it is monitoring the situation, it otherwise wouldn’t comment Monday on where the Canadian planes have been flying in Syria and whether they are in any increased risk of danger. The ministry says it views the incident as Washington’s “deliberate failure to make good on its commitments” under the de-confliction deal.”What is this if not an act of aggression?”A USA military official has brushed off Russia’s warnings that it will track planes in Syria with anti-aircraft batteries, following the U.S.’s downing of a Syrian Su-22 bomber.Russian Federation has been a staunch supporter of Syria’s beleaguered President Bashar Assad and has been providing an air cover for this offensive since 2015. Tom Shannon, the State Department No. 3, will meet Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister.
