Significant Rain, Flash Floods Possible Monday

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued at 1:35 p.m. and is in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday.Another very moist airmass will move into western and central NY on Sunday with a potential for training heavy thunderstorms from the western Southern Tier across the Genesee Valley and western Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake Ontario region. Between 2 pm and 4 pm showers and storms will be moving through the Finger Lakes region. These storms could become severe as they move into central NY later this afternoon and evening.The immediate Buffalo area should escape the worst of the storms though heavy rainfall is possible during the evening hours. This will result in the potential for flash flooding, especially in urban and poor-drainage areas. It does not mean that they will occur; it only means they are possible.A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for parts of the area on Monday.The flash flood watch affects southern and northern Litchfield County, Hartford, and Windsor Locks, as well as parts of NY, western MA and southern Vermont.It could produce winds gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour, hail, thunder and lightning, weather officials said.With thunderstorms in the forecast for Monday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for all but the coast of Maine. The weather conditions could down trees and power lines.
