50 firefighters tackle blaze at Bethnal Green flats

The flat and the building’s roof were destroyed by the flames.According to reports this evening over 50 firefighters in the London district of Bethnal Green are now putting out a fire that has broken out at block flats.One person has been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.Footage from bystanders showed huge flames bursting through the windows of the building as smoke billowed into the sky.London Fire Brigade has said it has eight engines at the blaze, which started in a third floor flat and has spread to the roof of the building.According to BBC, Rushanara Ali, member of parliament (MP) for Bethnal Green and Bow, who was at the scene described residents as “anxious given what has happened in Grenfell Tower”. The brigade’s 999 control took almost 50 calls.It had received 50 calls to its emergency telephone line.Firefighters from Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations are attending the scene.The cause of the fire is not yet known.
