Amit Shah, CM Fadnavis meet Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray

In the editorial the Shiv Sena said that while the BJP may win in case of snap polls in Maharashtra and also get its presidential nominee elected, but wondered whether it would be able to save the valley. It said the Sena will take a “final decision” on Kovind in the meeting of its party leaders scheduled here tomorrow. However, he said the party would not tolerate if the candidature is intended for ensuring provision of Dalit votes, as the Shiv Sena keeps away from vote-bank politics. Shah had called on Thackeray at his residence here yesterday.Earlier in the day, Shah had telephoned Thackeray to convey him that Kovind will be the NDA candidate for presidential election.”If the name of Kovind is being put forward with a view to garner dalit votes then the Sena is not interested”. We will always support the cause of farmers. Though the saffron party has been speaking to different parties across the ideological spectrum, it has given no indication of who its choice for the top constitutional post will be.The Prime Minister said that Kovind will make an exceptional President and continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised. In the past two presidential polls, Sena broke ranks with NDA and backed Congress’ Pranab Mukherjee and Pratibha Patil.Thackeray said Sena had proposed Bhagwat’s name while keeping in mind the concept of “Hindurashtra” (Hindu nation).”When the Sena talks about farmers and takes a nationalist stand over issues, attempts are made to teach us a lesson”.While a host of BJP and Sena leaders also graced the Thackeray home, none of them were part of the meeting. Sena has 63 MLAs. The Sena chief has kept the BJP waiting. The Congress-led UPA has 15 MPs from the state in both the houses of Parliament. The total value of NDA’s vote is 5.32 lakh and falling short by 17,000 to cross the halfway mark. They said that when they decide, they will come back to us with a proposal.Expressing its concern over the renewed spate of terror in the Kashmir Valley and the violence in West Bengal’s Darjeeling, the Sena said these heavenly places on earth are now passing through a bad spell, but “some people” are more eager about winning mid-term elections in Maharashtra. “Don’t try to threaten us with mid-term polls. Pawar is Modi’s guru, can’t say what’s in one’s heart”, Thackeray had said. After winning the Lok Sabha, assembly and local body polls the confidence of BJP is high as it is preparing for the 2019 general election. If anyone is so boisterous then let them hold mid-term elections.
