China evades questions on funding Pakistan’s dam in Gilgit-Baltistan

The issue of security and Pak-Afghan tension was actively discussed on the sidelines of the recently-held Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana where Pakistan and India were admitted to the SCO fold as full members, the insider said.Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi voiced support for an “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process” to end the decades-old conflict in the country during his unannounced trip to Kabul on Saturday.He was talking to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Islamabad.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week during a Congressional hearing on the State Department’s annual budget proposals said that the Trump administration is beginning an inter-agency policy review of relations with Pakistan and the president has specifically asked questions about the level of support and funding to Islamabad.Terming Pakistan as important cou an try in South Asia, China on Thursday asked the worldwide community to acknowledge and support the counterterrorism efforts made by Pakistan on the basis of respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.Aziz said that global counter terrorism situation is getting tougher recently as terror incidents have occurred more frequently, and Pakistan has suffered a lot from terrorist attacks.He added that China is willing to improve strategic communication and strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with Pakistan in order to maintain the two countries’ common interests.He also supported the revival of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group of Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the USA for peace and security in Afghanistan.”[The] China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will bring economic stability in the region and Beijing will fully support in the developmental process of Pakistan by this mega project”, Wang was quoted as saying.”We know that there are some “concerns” about this corridor but we keep stressing that this economic corridor is just an economic initiative for cooperation and it targets no third country and does not connect with any sovereign disputes”, he added.He said both the countries stood for peace and cooperation and would promote trade and industry.Geng Shuang hoped that the disputes between India and Pakistan will be resolved properly through consultations and negotiations.An official statement later quoted Yi as telling his Afghan interlocutors that “if required, China will be ready to observe and explain steps” both Pakistan and Afghanistan are taking against terrorism and extremism.In his speech, Asaf Romirowsky stated that troop enhancement by the U.S. in Afghanistan would not improve the situation on ground, given the ongoing instability in Pakistan.Shehbaz said a new era of development and progress has ushered in Pakistan due to projects of CPEC, which are becoming a reality after their completion in record time.The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Islamabad after visiting Kabul.
