Colombian rebels release kidnapped Dutch journalists

Colombia’s ELN rebel force said Friday it had released two Dutch journalists it kidnapped in the north of the country four days ago.”In a rural area of Catatumbo, in Norte de Santander, the two Dutch journalists were handed over (on Friday night) by the ELN to a Commission of Colombian Human Rights Ombudsman”, Efe news quoted the statement as saying. They have a long journey through the jungle ahead of them.Hernandez and the Colombian journalists were released a few days later.”Derk Bolt and Eugenio Follender were released today in the very unsafe region of Catatumbo in northern Colombia”, he said, adding that the families of both men have been informed and that the ambassador has been able to speak with them.Bolt is host of a Dutch television show called Spoorloos (Without a Trace), Follender a cameraman for the show, which attempts to help people find their long-lost blood relatives.Fears were raised for peace talks between the rebels and the government. We are grateful to everyone who has worked to release Derk and Eugenio. “We apologize and reiterate that the two foreigners are in flawless condition”, it tweeted.Like the families, we were very concerned about our close colleagues at KRO-NCRV. “They always told us our lives weren’t in danger”.The ELN, now engaged in exploratory talks with the Colombian government in Ecuador, said on Wednesday they would release the Dutch journalists to a humanitarian commission if they determined that one of their units had kidnapped them.Kidnappings are said to be a key stumbling block to peace negotiations…In May 2016, ELN fighters in Filogringo kidnapped Spanish journalist Salud Hernandez, subsequently grabbing several Colombian reporters who came to the area to cover the initial abduction. The Colombian civil conflict erupted in 1964 when the FARC and ELN took up arms for rural land rights. The violence drew in various anti-government and paramilitary forces and drug gangs, as well as state forces.Do you ever have any question about anything you wish to ask and get answer?Hello.
