Five hurt as auto strikes pedestrians outside Newcastle sports centre

A 42-year-old woman has been arrested after at least six people were injured in a collision with a auto outside a sports centre in Newcastle.British media reported that an event was held at the sports center to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.”Police enquiries are on-going to establish exactly what happened but, at this time, it is not believed to be a terror incident”, the statement reads.A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is now in police custody.ChronicleLive quoted one witnesses as saying people were gathering for prayers at the time of the incident which happened around 10am.A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received the first 999 call at 9.15am, to a report of a vehicle that has mounted the lavement”.The Finsbury Park attack suspect, Darren Osborne, was charged with terrorism related murder and attempted murder.A statement from the nearby Newcastle Central Mosque said the collision happened immediately after people were leaving the mosque following Eid prayers.”Emergency services are now at the scene and six casualties have been confirmed”.Emergency services were called to the scene in Newcastle shortly after 9 a.m. (0800GMT), according to the Northumbria police authorities, which confirmed that six people had been injured.”We pray and hope that all those affected recover soon fully”.They earlier said they were “aware of an incident” outside the centre and said emergency services were in attendance.”The police are investigating the incident at the moment and we will give an update as soon as we have more information”.
