Massive oil tanker fire kills 123 in Ahmadpur Sharqia

As many as 123 people were burnt to death while around 40 others were left injured as an oil tanker caught fire after overturning on National Highway near Ahmedpur Sharqia in Bahawalpur this morning.Another 50 people were seriously injured. Geo News quoted eyewitnesses as saying that some people in the vicinity were smoking cigarettes, which could have ignited the inferno.He says the death toll is likely to rise.The fire brigade arrived on the site of the incident shortly after the blaze started and rescue operations are underway, reports Dawn news. They will become recognisable after DNA test, said the rescue sources.It said dozens of vehicles iwere engulfed in flames.When contacted, Government of Punjab Spokesperson Malik Ahmed Khan said injured persons who can not be accommodated at the hospitals in Bahawalpur and Multan would be sent to other facilities. Subserquently motorway police set up two diversions, near Noorpur Nauranga and the other one near Dera Nawaz.Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the accident and ordered the concerned authorities to take emergency steps for better treatment of the people.
