Ram Nath Kovind will make exceptional President: PM Modi

The Opposition may field a joint candidate against NDA’s nominee Ram Nath Kovind, sources in the Left parties said tonight.”We are very happy to know that Ramnath Kovind has been selected as the NDA presidential nominee”.He said, his party had expected that BJP will discuss main names which the party may announce for the presidential candidate but it did not discuss.Reacting to Mayawati’s “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should have selected a name from a non-political background which will be better” remark, NCP leader Majeed Memon said the former can not openly oppose a Dalit candidate so she went the other way. With his illustrious background in the legal arena, Shri Kovind’s knowledge and understanding of the Constitution will benefit the nation. He said in a tweet, “I’m sure Kovind will make an exceptional President and continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden and the maginalised”.He also asked opposition parties to support the Dalit candidate, claiming that if they put up a candidate against Kovind then they would be seen as “anti-Dalit”.”Since Mayawati has to take care of her Dalit vote bank, she can not openly oppose a Dalit candidate”.”The BJP hopes that a person born in a poor family of low-caste Dalit community will be a consensus candidate for the president’s post”. Modi requested Rao to support the candidate.Mr Kovind reached New Delhi on Monday evening and is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.He has also headed groups that work to improve the conditions of Dalits. “The office of President is a key post”.On his part, the soft-spoken Kovind said he would appeal to all political parties and members of the electoral college to back him.CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the non-NDA parties will take the decision “keeping in mind the country’s history that the ruling and opposition parties contested the polls on all occasion except once”.Apart from Mr Khattar, the state’s Agriculture Minister Om Parkash Dhankar also congratulated Kovind, an official release said.
